A Double Header #STEM Weekend!
STEM Kids Rock had an amazing weekend thanks to Regional Councillor Nirmala Armstrong and the Hounourable Bob Saroya, MP who invited our STEM Squad to their community New Year's Levee.
On Saturday, January 13th, the STEM Kids Rock Girls Only Squad came out to support Regional Councillor Nirmala Armstrong's New Year's Levee. The event also showcased the Markham Thunder of the Canadian Women's Hockey League! The entire team came over to our tables and we soon learned that a number of them were scholar athletes working in the fields of science! We were so inspired, especially by Markham Thunder teammates Fielding Montgomery and Karolina Urban!
Fielding Montgomery, a member of the Markham Thunder Women's Hockey Team, is a graduate of Dalhousie University and currently a PhD student at the University of Toronto! She is studying conservation ecology and the role of habitat loss and fragmentation on locale and regional species extinction, using freshwater fishes in southwestern Ontario as a model system. Just WOW! Fielding you are SO INSPIRING! PLUS, she is an advocated for women in sports and science!
Equally inspiring was Karolina Urban, a member of the Markham Thunder Women's Hockey Team, who is just about to complete her PhD in Neuroscience! She is very involved in Concussion Research at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab Hospital and works on projects that involve neuro-imaging modalities in youth with concussion.
Both women are so #STEMbrilliant and we just were so fortunate to have met them. Thank you Regional Councillor Nirmala Armstrong for connecting STEM Kids Rock with these amazing women of Markham Thunder! Go #ThunderNation!
On Sunday, January 14th, we attended the Honourable Bob Saroya's New Year's Levee at Angus Glen Community Centre! It was great to meet new people and inspire the little ones that attended the event with our prehistoric fossils, exotic insects and unique mineral collection! Especially grateful to our STEM Kids Rock Squad for coming out and supporting two events this past weekend!
Upcoming STEM Event!
Our next public event will be at the Markham Public Libraries Family Literacy Event on January, 27th from 10:00am - 1:00pm at the new Aaniin Community Centre & Library. This is our third year being at this free outreach event, we look forward to seeing you!
